Social Tries to Be Vegetarian Friendly (Fails)

Social is promoing a veggie special on Monday. As someone who doesn't eat meat and just attempted to have a meal at Social... I'd say skip it.

Just a few days ago they were out of one of the only veggie items on the menu - the mushroom dish. So we ordered the "Vegetable Tempura," which I would not describe as tempura at all, but rather deep-fried beer-battered carrots. The vegetables are grease soaked by the time they reach the table, there was probably a 2:1 batter to veggie ratio, and I think there were two or possibly three vegetable varieties at most.

In case you'd like to disagree and try it out, here is in the info:

Meatless Monday
$5/$11/$16 Veggie Tempura & Oven Roasted Madeira Mushrooms in the Living Room
Vegetarians need not be wary of the Living Room at Social our food specials will make any Monday better! The Oven Roasted Madeira Mushrooms are a delectable meat-free option served with creamy Herbed Goat Toast, coupled with the Veggie Tempura, Social can be your dinner destination.

They were out of the mushrooms on Friday, so we can't testify to how those were.

Actually, I am a vegetarian and frequent Social often. The mushrooms (when they do have them) are really good - one of my favorite dishes in DC. They also have great cheese plates. Check out their brunch on Sundays... they have many more veggie options - and the cheese grits are ridiculous. The atmosphere also makes it worth checking out. So, don’t give up on them yet…

I find the "social" nature of their atmosphere questionable... When I went I had to sit on a couch and my friends and I were so low on such a deep couch that we could barely see each other, let alone socialize.

And why are they always out of stuff? Their menu isn't that big and yet they are always missing at least one or two dishes!

I agree. It's pretty much the only reason I haven't eaten there yet. Mushrooms, seriously? That's all you can think of in 2010? All it tells me is they don't give a crap and the mushrooms are simply a perfunctory afterthought. No thanks.

Mushrooms with cheese, batter-fried veggies and a cheese plate. Sounds like the menu for obese vegetarians.
