So tonight I made myself a delicious dinner. Baked salmon, a spinach salad, and fresh blueberries. And my delicious dinner? It came from Giant in Columbia Heights... the result of a Sunday shopping trip.
As any longtime CH shopper knows, Sundays at Giant are usually obscenely crowded and wholly problematic. I do suppose a few weeks ago I had just such a Sunday experience, but this Sunday it was quite the opposite.
The store was clean, well-stocked, the produce selection was solid, the line moved fast, there was actually a bagger there, and they have cookies that look like hamburgers. I hear this is because of new management (all the improvements, not just the cookies). And hey - it seems to be working. For a while I was doing all my grocery shopping in the frozen foods aisle at Target, but no more!

The last few weeks, the produce I've bought at Giant has gone bad within 3 days of purchase. This has happened with tomatoes, peaches, and strawberries. So, no, I am not too happy with Giant right now.
I also went last Sunday early evening, and the checkout lines were stretching half way back each aisles and moving at a glacial pace...so I guess you picked the right time to go. What's the secret?
I've also had mostly good experiences at Giant lately. With the exception of one bad produce day (couldn't find a decent bunch of cilantro to save my life) I haven't hit the dreaded lines of death in months.
Definitely avoid 5-6 PM on weekends. I usually go on a random weeknight after work and I've had no problems at all.
Oh and the pharmacy - WAY better than CVS. Went to CVS on a Sunday morning. By 9:15 they still hadn't opened (supposed to open at 9) and there were about 10 people waiting there.
So I wandered over to Giant. No line, they were open, and prescription was done 15 minutes later. Awesome.
Yeah, I definitely feel like Giant trips have gone a lot more efficiently as of late... The issue with lines is one I've found at every single grocery store I've been to in the District.
I have been to giant once in the last month on a sunday afternoon so I was expecting the worse and I got it. It was a good reminder of why I love harris teeter on kalorama....
ellewood is gonna do gangbusters if they ever get opened.
Weekend evenings at Giant definitely blow, but weekend daytimes are pretty much a breeze.
