Civic Plaza Under Construction, But Already Working

This is the image of the Columbia Heights Civic Plaza at Park Triangle on Sunday night. A small jam band had formed near the Rita's entrance and tons of families and friends were lounging around on the newly constructed structures circling the fountain.

Despite the construction all around - from the torn up streets to the guy who had been toiling all weekend under a tarp doing work on the fountain tiles - the civic plaza is already working as a great community meeting place. I'm pretty excited for the final result.

Oh I'm so happy, I can't wait. On this morning's commute, I saw some Supervisor-types doing a walk-through and inspecting the progress. Yay!

this thing is gonna be a fucking nightmare... the houseing projects are like two blocks away. I would be pissed if i paid for one of those new condos that stand between the ghetto and the "fountain". You just wait till next summer when its blistering hot and all the "local" children will be in the fucking road and will just bring lotering from other "people"

Anonymous: why would you even live in the neighborhood if you didn't realize there were projects next door?

Also, is it not a fountain? Are the kids not local? Are they not people? What's with the scare quotes?

Well Danny, I also am a Geographer.. and if you don't understand then there is small hope. I live less than a block away from there and its already a mess. The trees they had before worked just fine. Providing the urban landscape with, cooler temps shade and of course O2. I was here before you and I'll be here after you Graduate college. Don't be the fucking typical douche bag co hi punk that thinks you are gonna change the fucking world. Better hurry, happy hour at Wonderland is ending Fucko.

I am a CoHi homeowner and don't plan on going anywhere, Anon. I can't believe how shockingly different your attitude is compared to mine.

I have already used those benches while filling out some paperwork en route to the bank! Great people gathering and hanging out place.

It is a shame they eliminated all the trees though. I don't see why it had to be an either/or thing. Why couldn't we have BOTH a fountain and trees?

The plan is to have trees/greenery: http://www.princeofpetworth.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/streetscape-columbia-heights-2.pdf

Anonymous, I don't even know who you are (tho I do have a couple of guesses), but I think it's fascinating that my comment about your at-best-nondirectional vitriol just unleashed more vitriol.

I live here, and I agree with the other anonymous Local Resident. Ballston is calling your name.
