Crappy Crossing Addendum: 14th and Irving

A few weeks ago I wrote about the "Crappy Crossings" of Columbia Heights, aka the worst intersections. At the time, 14th and Park won and several commenters agreed.

But now... with the pitiful two-lane road and mass of construction to fuel our new fountain... is there anything worse than 14th and Irving? It's perpetually blocked by buses and backed up traffic. Pedestrians have to weave through traffic to find a way through, no matter which corner they leave from. And the drivers are angrier than ever.

The only upside: our fountain is looking lovely and more of that construction seems to wrap up on a daily basis.

The flashing sign warning drivers of this mess further down 14th had an end date of Sept 15 on it... I noticed they've since edited this part out...

That intersection truly is a disaster.

I made the unforgivable mistake of trying to drive somewhere near Target on Saturday to drop off my gf (because it was pouring).

I got about 20 feet off of 13th Street before bailing out into an alley since it was backed up all the way. This was around 1 PM Saturday. Won't make that mistake again anytime soon.

I would argue that the mess at Pine/Park/16th is even worse. Not least because in preparation for the future, DDOT has covered all the crosswalk signals in burlap. After surviving 14th/Park, auto drivers are so angry and aggressive that they take it out on the poor pedestrians who are just trying to cross safely but have no indicators to know when that is.
